Matters of Formality

INVITATION: "Black-tie optional" No it isn't. Wear the appropriate formal wear for the lady on your arm and the host. Dress respectfully.

The following formal wear suggestions are from the GQ magazine publication.
MATTERS OF FORMALITY
MOST MEN LOOK BEST WHEN FORMALLY ATTIRED-BUT ONLY IF THEY REMEMBER THE FOLLOWING TIPS.

Start with the lapels, choose one of three options: a one-button, single-breasted, peak lapel; a double-breasted model or the younger, more casual shawl collar.

Collars count, a formal shirt with a long point collar and a simple pleated front is the best choice. Most of the wing shirts sold today are inferior fabric, thus, the collar does not stay upright in the manner it should be worn. For connoisseurs demanding the wing collar, demand a quality fabric that will hold a heavy starch well. (P.S. never wear a spread collar with a bow tie.

Take A Bow, There is an unfortunate trend to wear skinny ties, a trend that is inappropriate and as most trends, way past its prime. The bow tie is the proper selection always.

Think different, black is the obvious choice for a tuxedo, however, a rich mid-night blue shows even “blacker” than black. Why not wear something exceptional? Also, select grosgrain over shiny silk satin lapels.

Accessories with style, a simple white linen pocket square. An opportunity to show an individual style with the selection of cuff-links and shirt studs of choice. (Remember, you want compliments, not comments). Classic onyx, platinum, or small diamonds perhaps?

Show a vested interest, either a vest or a cummerbund is essential. With a single breasted dinner jacket. While vests are an excellent choice, forgo the bold patterns or “loud” patterns. Also, avoid matching cummerbunds and bow ties. (Exception black only).

Shoes wisely, feel comfortable selecting a simple, plain toe black leather oxford. The patent leather shoe is not an automatic choice. And be sure to wear appropriate, thin black hosiery. (a personal pet peeve)

Don’t forget outerwear, top off your formal attire with the simple cashmere, cashmere blend overcoat. Simply going “without” truly takes away from your initial presence, and yes, it is important.

Tux, redux, for a dressy, but not strictly formal, evening-say, dinner at a fine restaurant or attending an Opera – wear a dark color mohair or silk blend suit. With a solid tie and white shirt with cuff links.
Dress Respectfully,
Doug
